A european research team announced that it has created a prototype of solar cell which presents an astonishing 44.7% energy efficiency. To help you figure out what this means, you just need to know that currently traded solar cells have an energy efficiency ranging from 10 to 15%.
Of course this does not imply at all that we will deal with hyper efficient solar panels in the next few years: these findings require much time to be tested and receive approval from the autorities for market production. This achievement is anyway a big step toward a future scenario characterized by a steeper decline in solar energy price and a more rapid diffusion of solar panels than we could have ever imagined.
The developments of the project and the sector as a whole are therefore definitely something to follow carefully: further positive results could really spur radical changes in the world economy.
